Adult outcomes after childhood CSWS and Landau–Kleffner Syndrome
This study followed seven young adults who had been diagnosed with CSWS or LKS in childhood. Researchers assessed their intellectual functioning, language abilities, and executive functions to better understand their long-term outcomes.
The results showed that epilepsy itself often improves over time, with only one participant still experiencing active seizures in adulthood. However, many neuropsychological difficulties persisted. Most individuals who had CSWS continued to experience significant cognitive impairment, and only two participants followed a typical educational pathway. In contrast, the adults who had Landau–Kleffner syndrome had normal intellectual abilities but continued to experience severe and disabling language difficulties that affected everyday life.
The findings highlight that although seizures may resolve, the developmental impacts of these conditions can persist into adulthood, with different long-term profiles depending on the syndrome.
